JACKSON — A standoff in South Jackson ended safely Tuesday after Jackson police spent nearly 12 hours negotiating with a man who had barricaded himself inside a home with his children, police said.
One child remained inside the home with the man Tuesday morning as officers continued negotiations. Two other children were released during the standoff, while an older teen had gotten out of the house before police arrived.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said there had been no violence or gunfire during the incident. Police had not seen a weapon but were treating the man as potentially armed.
The incident began around 6:45 p.m. Monday on Dianne Drive, when robbery-homicide detectives were in the area following up on shootings and homicides from the weekend.
Brackney said detectives were attempting to speak with witnesses and potential suspects when one detective encountered the man. Police said the man ran into the home of estranged family members, where he was not supposed to be.
The man was reportedly in the area to drop off his children but then barricaded himself inside the home with them.
Police deployed their SWAT team and crisis negotiation team. The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with crisis negotiations.
Brackney said police were deliberately slowing the situation down and working toward a peaceful resolution, with the safety of the remaining child the primary concern.
Police have not released the man’s name or details about the investigation that initially brought detectives to the area. Brackney said releasing information could prompt people to contact the man through social media and interfere with negotiations.
