According to the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit, agents received information Sept. 24 about the alleged sale of illegal substances from a retail business in Oxford.

Investigators said agents conducted a controlled purchase of illegal substances from the business and later obtained a search warrant.

Law enforcement officers then searched Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store in the 100 block of Heritage Drive.

During the search, agents said they recovered more than 500 units of kratom, along with THC cartridges, gummies and other suspected narcotics.

Authorities said possession, distribution and sale of kratom have been prohibited within the city of Oxford since 2019.

Yahya Mohamed Mosleh, 51, and Islam Mohamed, 18, both of Oxford, were arrested and charged with possession of Schedule I controlled substances with intent to distribute.

The narcotics unit also said the business owner, Amer Alowdi, 40, was indicted on trafficking charges in 2022 and fled the country before prosecution.

Investigators said additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

Authorities said the case remains active and that additional arrests are possible.

Mosleh and Mohamed are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
