Two Columbus men killed in Lowndes County crash

COLUMBUS — Two Columbus men were killed early Sunday morning after the vehicle they were traveling in left the roadway and struck a tree in Lowndes County, according to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 4:25 a.m. Sept. 20 to the 400 block of Black Creek Road after receiving an automated notification of a vehicle crash.

Deputies found a silver Lincoln Town Car that had left the roadway and struck a tree, causing extensive damage. Two people were inside the vehicle and were unresponsive.

Deputies determined neither person was breathing, and emergency medical personnel later confirmed both were dead.

The Sheriff’s Office said a preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control before leaving the roadway and striking the tree.

The identities of the two men were being withheld pending notification of their families and completion of appropriate procedures.

The crash remains under investigation.
