GULFPORT – The Gulfport Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across the country Tuesday, Sept. 22, for an initiative aimed at preventing injuries and deaths near railroad tracks.
The department is participating in Operation Clear Track, a nationwide effort organized with rail safety nonprofit Operation Lifesaver Inc. and the Amtrak Police Department.
During the initiative, officers will share rail safety information at railroad crossings, transit stations and other locations. The effort also focuses on enforcing laws related to railroad crossings and trespassing on railroad property.
Operation Clear Track is part of See Tracks? Think Train Week, which runs Sept. 21-27.
Gulfport police said the goal is to increase public awareness of railroad hazards and reduce pedestrian and driver injuries and fatalities near tracks.
