Jackson officer, suspect injured in officer-involved shooting on Raymond Road

JACKSON — A Jackson Police Department officer and a suspect suffered minor injuries Friday after exchanging gunfire during an officer-involved shooting on Raymond Road, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney.

The shooting happened in the 1000 block of Raymond Road after the officer, who was in a patrol car, heard multiple gunshots and saw a person running across the street with a weapon, Brackney said.

The officer gave the person verbal commands to drop the weapon. According to Brackney, the suspect turned and fired at the officer, who returned fire and struck the suspect.

The suspect suffered what Brackney described as a graze wound and was taken to a hospital in stable condition. The officer was not shot but suffered minor wounds while engaging the suspect and taking him into custody, Brackney said.

A second weapon was recovered at the scene, according to the chief.

The suspect’s identity has not been released. Brackney said police were working to verify the suspect’s identity and did not want to release information while the person was receiving medical treatment.

MBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Investigators are gathering evidence, including video and witness statements, according to Brackney.

Jackson Police Department’s internal affairs team, robbery-homicide investigators and crime scene personnel also responded to the scene.

MBI said its investigation is preliminary and subject to change. Once the investigation is complete, agents will provide their findings to the local district attorney’s office and the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
