OXFORD — An Ole Miss junior is facing multiple surgeries and a lengthy recovery after he was found unconscious along a roadside Saturday with severe facial injuries, according to a GoFundMe campaign established to help his family with medical and other expenses.
KP Pillstrom, a member of Pi Kappa Phi, was found Sept. 12 with multiple facial fractures and other serious injuries. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and Pillstrom has no memory of what happened.
The fundraiser states that the injuries are believed to have possibly resulted from an accidental fall, but that has not been confirmed.
Pillstrom was transported to a trauma center in Jackson, where he was treated for his injuries. He was later able to briefly return home while doctors waited for swelling to subside before beginning the next phase of treatment.
His first surgery is tentatively scheduled for Friday and will focus on repairing broken bones in his face. He is expected to remain hospitalized for several days afterward. Additional reconstructive surgeries and ongoing medical care are expected in the weeks and months ahead.
Pillstrom’s parents have taken leave from work to be with him during his recovery. His treatment is about three hours from their home, requiring frequent trips to Jackson as well as expenses for lodging and meals.
Pillstrom also is expected to be unable to attend classes or work while doctors determine the extent and timeline of his recovery.
The GoFundMe campaign is raising money to help cover medical and reconstructive surgery expenses, travel, lodging and meals for his family, lost income, school-related costs and other expenses associated with his recovery.
The fundraiser describes Pillstrom as hardworking, kind, independent and determined, noting that he has balanced college, work and other responsibilities while supporting himself.
Friends and family also are asking for prayers and support as Pillstrom begins what they describe as a long road to recovery. Updates about his surgeries and progress are expected to be shared through the fundraiser.
The campaign also asks those who cannot donate to share the fundraiser and continue keeping Pillstrom and his family in their prayers.
