FLOWOOD — A family escaped a house fire on Luckney Road late Sunday night, but the home was destroyed despite firefighters’ efforts to contain the blaze.

Langford Fire Department crews were dispatched to the active attic fire at 9:59 p.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames showing above the garage.

Flowood Fire Department was called to provide a ladder truck, while additional crews were brought in to assist with the response. Several Rankin County fire departments also helped establish an additional water supply.

Approximately 70,000 gallons of water were shuttled to the scene to supplement the municipal water supply.

Firefighters made several attempts to conduct an interior attack, but eventually switched to a defensive strategy because of the conditions. The home was ultimately declared a total loss.

The family had been alerted to the fire and was able to escape. Only minor injuries were reported.

Fire crews remained at the scene until approximately 5 a.m. Monday.

Langford officials thanked Pafford EMS Mississippi, Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, Monterey Volunteer Fire Department, Robinhood Fire Department, Walters Volunteer Fire Station, Rankin County Emergency Operations, and the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office for assisting with the response.
