Tupelo police to begin enforcing kratom ban Sept. 12

TUPELO – The Tupelo Police Department says it will begin enforcing the city’s ordinance banning kratom and kratom products on Sept. 12.

The Tupelo City Council adopted the ordinance Feb. 3, but enforcement was delayed while a legal challenge moved through the courts. During that time, businesses were allowed to continue selling kratom products.

Police said enforcement will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 12.

Businesses that currently sell kratom or kratom products are being asked to prepare to comply with the ordinance before enforcement begins.

“The City has allowed the legal process to run its course, and businesses have been permitted to continue selling these products during that time,” Police Chief John Quaka said.

Quaka said the department is giving businesses 48 hours’ notice and an opportunity to comply voluntarily.

“Our goal is voluntary compliance with the ordinance,” he said.
