DeSoto County woman sentenced to 5 years for $3.19 million Medicaid fraud

Katricia Smith

JACKSON — A former DeSoto County medical services company owner has been sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to repay more than $3.19 million after pleading guilty to wire fraud in a Medicaid fraud case, according to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.

Katricia Smith, former owner of KLS Medical Services LLC in DeSoto County, was sentenced Tuesday by Madison County Circuit Judge Steve Ratcliff.

Smith was ordered to pay $3,190,017.93 in restitution to the Mississippi Division of Medicaid.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, Smith knowingly submitted false claims for Medicaid services she did not provide in 2023 and 2024.

The case was investigated by the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office and the Mississippi Division of Medicaid Program Integrity and prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.

“This case was one of 11 indictments the Attorney General announced in June as part of the National Health Care Fraud Takedown,” the office said. Those indictments involved more than $12.3 million in alleged fraud.

Attorney General Lynn Fitch said her office will continue working with the Division of Medicaid to protect taxpayer money.

“I am committed to rooting out waste, fraud, and corruption, and holding the scammers, fraudsters, and grifters accountable,” Fitch said.

Fitch said the partnership between the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and Mississippi Division of Medicaid helps ensure taxpayer dollars reach the Mississippians they are intended to serve.

Anyone who suspects Medicaid fraud can file a complaint with the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
