HERMANVILLE — Claiborne County Sheriff’s Deputy Terrian Bailey is being remembered as a husband, father, friend and dedicated law enforcement officer after he was killed in the line of duty while responding to a crowd at a Hermanville convenience store.
Bailey was shot shortly after midnight while deputies were attempting to disperse a crowd in the parking lot of Michael Dean’s Convenience Store, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. A female bystander also was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Bailey was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A $25,000 reward has been offered for information in his death, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation by MBI. Agents are gathering evidence and will provide their findings to the local District Attorney’s Office and the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office when the investigation is complete.
Bailey’s death prompted an outpouring of condolences from law enforcement agencies and public officials across Mississippi.
Gov. Tate Reeves said Bailey leaves behind a wife and four children.
“This senseless act of violence took the life of a husband, father and hero,” Reeves said. “Those responsible will be brought to justice.”
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said Bailey was more than the uniform and badge he wore, describing him as a charismatic deputy whose personality touched many of the people he encountered.
“He was a husband, a father, a friend, a coworker, and a public servant,” Patten said.
Patten offered condolences to Bailey’s wife, Detranell Bailey, their children, Sheriff Edward Goods and the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office.
“His service mattered, his presence mattered, and the lives he touched will carry a piece of him forward,” Patten said.
Patten also spoke about the shared bond among law enforcement officers, saying that while agencies may be separated by county lines, jurisdictions, ranks and uniforms, the profession’s oath and calling unite officers as one family.
“When one law enforcement family hurts, we all hurt,” Patten said.
He also urged officers to check on one another and to hold their families close.
“Tomorrow is never promised to any of us,” Patten said.
The Claiborne County Emergency Management Agency said the community is mourning Bailey’s loss and extended condolences to his family, Sheriff Edward Good and the entire Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department.
“Rest in peace, Deputy Bailey. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” the agency said.
Sheriffs and police departments from across Mississippi also offered condolences, including the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Calhoun County Sheriff Greg Pollan, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department and the Ackerman Police Department.
Pollan specifically offered prayers for Goods, calling him “my brother sheriff.”
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree D. Jones also remembered Bailey, saying he had seen the deputy serving his community in Port Gibson just hours before his death.
Jones was in Port Gibson Sunday to honor former Sheriff Frank Davis when he saw Bailey dressed in a suit, helping block intersections and ensure a procession moved safely through the city.
“He carried himself with professionalism, humility, and honor — not knowing that he would answer his final call just hours later,” Jones said.
Jones said that image of Bailey would remain with him and represented the “quiet, steadfast service” provided by deputies who often work without recognition.
“Deputy Bailey served with commitment and pride, and his sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Jones said.
MBI has not released information identifying a suspect in the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
