JACKSON — The Mississippi Highway Patrol will increase enforcement efforts and establish safety checkpoints across the state during the Labor Day holiday travel period, which begins Friday evening and continues through midnight Monday.

The 2026 Labor Day travel period begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, and ends at midnight Monday, Sept. 7.

Troopers will conduct high-visibility patrols and safety checkpoints aimed at deterring speeding, impaired and distracted driving, while also enforcing seat belt laws, the agency said.

During the 2025 Labor Day holiday travel period, MHP investigated 159 crashes, including three fatal crashes that resulted in three deaths. Troopers also issued 617 citations for occupant restraint violations and made 92 DUI arrests on state and federal highway systems.

MHP urged motorists to use caution and make safe driving a priority during the holiday weekend.
