JACKSON — Mississippi will join the nationwide celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day on Sept. 26, with Gov. Tate Reeves issuing a proclamation recognizing the annual observance in the state.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announced its participation in the event, which was established in 1972 to recognize hunters and anglers and their contributions to fish and wildlife conservation.

The observance comes as hunting seasons begin across Mississippi, offering opportunities ranging from dove hunting and deer velvet season to fall fishing as temperatures begin to cool.

MDWFP officials said hunting and fishing traditions connect Mississippians with the outdoors while also contributing to conservation efforts and the state’s economy.

Through the American System of Conservation Funding, Mississippi hunters and anglers generate millions of dollars each year to support wildlife management, habitat conservation and outdoor recreation, according to the department.

MDWFP is encouraging residents to celebrate by taking a friend or family member outdoors.

“National Hunting and Fishing Day honors sportsmen and women whose passion and support have helped conserve Mississippi’s natural resources for generations,” MDWFP Executive Director Lynn Posey said. “We are grateful to be part of this celebration.”
