GREENVILLE — A Coahoma County man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, federal prosecutors announced.

Walter Walton, 34, was sentenced Tuesday by Chief U.S. District Judge Debra M. Brown to 46 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

According to court documents, Walton knowingly possessed a firearm after previously being convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison.

Walton pleaded guilty to the charge at an earlier date. A Taurus .357-caliber revolver was forfeited under a final order of forfeiture.

The FBI and Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Clyde McGee prosecuted the case.

The investigation and conviction were part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative, according to federal authorities.
