Robert Earl LoftonHAMILTON — A 60-year-old Monroe County man has been charged with child abuse by poisoning and child molestation following an investigation that began after a minor tested positive for a controlled substance, authorities said.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit investigators arrested Robert Earl Lofton of the Lackey community near Hamilton on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Investigators said they received information about the possible molestation of a minor Aug. 26 after the minor tested positive for a controlled substance.
Lofton was charged with one count of child abuse by poisoning and one count of child molestation.
He is being held at the Monroe County Detention Center awaiting bond.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said no additional details could be released at this time.
Lofton is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
