CALHOUN COUNTY — A Calhoun County sheriff’s deputy and his family narrowly escaped an early morning house fire Saturday after the deputy was awakened by the family’s dog and found the home fully engulfed in flames.
School Resource Officer Deputy Jeremy Pounders and his family lost everything in the fire, which began at approximately 4 a.m., Calhoun County Sheriff Greg Pollan said.
Pounders was able to get his family and dog out through a window, according to the sheriff. Pollan said Pounders then returned to gather as much of his work equipment as possible.
Pounders serves as the school resource officer at Calhoun City, where Pollan said he is beloved by students and staff.
“His dedication is beyond words,” Pollan said.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is promoting a GoFundMe to assist Pounders and his family and plans to provide updates on how the community can help.
Pollan asked the community to keep the family in their prayers and said he hopes residents will rally around Pounders as he and his family begin rebuilding after the fire.
“I’m asking the community to now show their love for him,” Pollan said.
