JACKSON — DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brian Brock, whose decision to drive his patrol vehicle into the path of a speeding wrong-way driver saved other motorists and nearly cost him his life, will be the keynote speaker for the Darkhorse Press 2026 Mississippi Front Line Hero Awards.
The awards banquet will be held Nov. 9 at Bravo in Jackson.
The Front Line Hero Awards, formerly the Blue Shield Awards, will honor Mississippi first responders who go above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrate extraordinary heroism in service to others.
Brock knows firsthand what it means to make that kind of decision.
In March 2025, Brock responded to reports of a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction on Interstate 269. Other deputies were pursuing the vehicle from behind but were unable to catch it.
Brock positioned himself ahead of the oncoming vehicle, knowing it was headed directly toward him and other unsuspecting motorists.
According to DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle, Brock saw the approaching headlights and made a decision that he believed could cost him his life.
“He tugged on his seatbelt twice and said, ‘This is it for me, but I’m going to do it,’” Tuggle said at the time.
Brock then drove his patrol vehicle into the path of the wrong-way driver, taking the impact head-on and shielding a motorist behind him.
That motorist was a physician who later told Tuggle that his life flashed before his eyes before he saw Brock’s patrol vehicle in front of him.
Brock suffered serious injuries but survived the crash. He was later named Mississippi’s 2025 First Responder of the Year during the Governor’s Public Safety Awards.
He was also one of the inaugural recipients of the Darkhorse Press Blue Shield Award in 2026.
Brock has nearly 16 years of law enforcement experience and has served in patrol, fugitive operations, tactical operations and school-based law enforcement. He currently supervises and mentors school resource officers and remains a member of the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team.
His service has been recognized at the local, state and national levels. In addition to being named Mississippi Governor’s First Responder of the Year and Mississippi Deputy of the Year, Brock has received the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office Medal of Valor and recognition from the Mississippi Legislature and the FBI.
Brock said the actions that brought him statewide recognition were simply about protecting people he had never met.
“My actions that night were simply about protecting the lives of people I had never met and fulfilling the responsibility I accepted when I chose a career in law enforcement,” he said.
A man of faith and a husband and father of four, Brock said his commitment to public safety extends beyond his own service to leadership, mentorship and strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Darkhorse Press Executive Editor Therese Apel said Brock is a fitting choice to speak to the honorees and guests at this year’s awards.
“Brian Brock understands heroism in a way few people ever will,” Apel said. “He made a conscious decision to put his own life between danger and someone he didn’t even know. That is the kind of selflessness these awards were created to recognize.”
The Front Line Heroes Awards will recognize first responders from across Mississippi whose courage, compassion and extraordinary actions exemplify the highest ideals of public service.
