GEORGE COUNTY – The George County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers who claim a family member can be released from jail or placed on an ankle monitor in exchange for payment.
The sheriff’s office said it has received reports of people getting calls asking them to send money or provide payment information over the phone.
Authorities said legitimate decisions involving an inmate’s release, bond or placement on an ankle monitor are handled through the court system or correctional facility and are not arranged through unsolicited phone payments.
Residents who receive one of the calls are urged not to provide personal or financial information.
The sheriff’s office recommends hanging up and contacting the correctional facility directly if there are questions about a family member’s custody status.
Officials are also asking residents to share the warning with family and friends to help prevent others from becoming victims.
