SOUTHAVEN – A baby possum is recovering after Southaven Animal Shelter staff freed it from a glue trap last week.
According to Friends of the Southaven Animal Shelter, the shelter received a call about the young possum after it became stuck to a glue trap inside a box.
A shelter worker named Perry picked up the animal and brought it back to the shelter, where it took more than 30 minutes to remove the glue.
The shelter said WD-40 and Dawn dishwashing liquid were used to help free and clean the possum.
Despite the animal’s small size, staff said it managed to bite Perry several times during the rescue.
Because the possum was too young to be released back into the wild, the shelter contacted a wildlife rehabilitator.
Petra, with Wildlife Rehab, picked up the possum to continue its care.
The rescue ended with an unexpected bonus for another shelter animal. Staff said Petra also fell in love with one of the shelter’s puppies and plans to return to adopt the dog once it is ready for a new home.
