SIMPSON COUNTY – The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after human skeletal remains were discovered near a home on Highway 541.
The investigation began shortly after 7:30 p.m. Sunday after homeowners reported that their dogs returned to the property carrying two large bones believed to be human femurs.
Residents told authorities the dogs had come from a nearby wooded area next to the property.
The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office then launched a multi-agency search and investigation of the area. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and K-9 units are assisting.
A Mississippi State University anthropology team is also involved in efforts to identify the remains.
Authorities have not yet released an identity or additional details about the remains.
The sheriff’s office said it plans to issue a formal update once more information becomes available.
