HOLMES COUNTY – The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a house fire in Holmes County that left one man dead early Wednesday.
According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, 45-year-old Jessie Jones was found dead inside a home on Head Start Drive in Goodman after the fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m. Aug. 12.
Investigators found evidence indicating the fire began in the kitchen and was caused by unattended cooking on a stovetop.
An autopsy has been requested to determine Jones’ official cause of death.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents to never leave cooking unattended and to keep flammable items away from stovetops. Officials also recommend turning pot handles inward, keeping a fire extinguisher nearby and keeping children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove while food is cooking.
The fire remains under investigation.
