HATTIESBURG – A 21-year-old Hattiesburg man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting late Thursday night, according to the Hattiesburg Police Department.
Officers responded around 11 p.m. Aug. 6 to the 200 block of Jesse Brown Street after receiving reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Investigators said the shooting followed a verbal argument in the front yard of a nearby residence.
The suspected shooter left the scene before officers arrived but was later taken into custody.
Police identified the suspect as Jalen Patterson of Hattiesburg. Patterson was charged with murder and tampering with evidence.
The Hattiesburg Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division continues to investigate the case.
Police said the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Patterson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
