LEE COUNTY – A dog has been taken into protective custody following an animal welfare investigation in Lee County that began after an Amazon delivery driver reported concerns about the animal’s condition.
North Mississippi Animal Care & Control Association LLC said officers responded Tuesday and investigated the report.
The findings were presented to a Lee County Justice Court judge, who signed an affidavit authorizing the dog to be taken into protective custody for further evaluation.
The dog was taken to the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society and is being held under a court-ordered hold. It is expected to receive a comprehensive veterinary evaluation to determine its overall health and the extent of any medical issues.
Animal control officials said the dog’s severely matted coat and overgrown nails raised significant welfare concerns.
Severe matting can pull on an animal’s skin, restrict circulation, trap moisture and waste, contribute to infections and conceal wounds or parasites, officials said. Overgrown nails can also affect a dog’s gait and contribute to pain or injuries involving the feet and joints.
Because the case remains under investigation, officials said they could not release additional details while the legal process continues.
North Mississippi Animal Care & Control thanked the Amazon delivery driver for reporting the situation and encouraged residents to report suspected animal neglect, cruelty or abandonment through Lee County 911 Dispatch or the Lee County Sheriff’s Department.
