LAFAYETTE COUNTY – A Taylor man has been arrested on a felony charge after authorities said an elderly man was assaulted at a residence in Lafayette County.
Deputies responded July 11 to the emergency department at Baptist Memorial Hospital after receiving a report that a man who was at least 65 years old had been assaulted at a home on County Road 303 in the Taylor community, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators identified 41-year-old Anthony Carothers of Taylor as the alleged attacker. A warrant was obtained charging him with simple assault on a person at least 65 years old, which is a felony under Mississippi law.
Deputies later located Carothers at his residence on County Road 303 and took him into custody without incident.
Carothers appeared in Lafayette County Justice Court, where his bond was set at $10,000. He remained in the Lafayette County Detention Center pending bond and was also being held on a Mississippi Department of Corrections detainer.
The sheriff’s office thanked the Oxford Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit for assisting with the case.
The charge is an accusation. Carothers is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
