JACKSON — A man was injured in an officer-involved shooting in downtown Jackson after authorities said he fired at a Capitol Police officer during a foot pursuit late Monday or early Tuesday.
The shooting happened near the intersection of Pearl and President streets, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Officials said a Capitol Police officer was patrolling the area when a security guard reported a person carrying a weapon around some businesses on State Street.
According to MBI, the officer located the man and attempted to speak with him, but the man fled,and there was a brief foot chase.
During the chase, the man allegedly fired his weapon at the officer. The officer returned fire, striking the man.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. No law enforcement officers suffered serious physical injuries, MBI said.
MBI says they are investigating the shooting and collecting evidence. Once the investigation is complete, agents will submit their findings to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for review.
Officials said the information is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues.
