JACKSON – Local rescuers, led by Jackson rescuer Chrissy Cheshire, responded to a trailer and property in West Jackson after an officer sent a photo of a concerning number of dogs in terrible condition around a property.
Chrissy Cheshire, who runs Cheshire Abbey in the Jackson area, said she could not unsee the picture after he sent it and had to go see if she could help.
She gathered other rescuers and volunteers and, along with the help of Jackson and Capitol Police, they went out to the property on Saturday.
Cheshire said there ended up being a total of 72 dogs they rescued from the property. She said most of the dogs were in terrible health, dying of heat inside of the trailer and around the trailer.
“It’s mind bending to think that some people live in those conditions, but we see things like this far too often—- although this is by far the most animals we’ve ever seen and rescued in 2 days.” Cheshire said in her post.
It took a huge team of people to help rescue all of the dogs inside.
They spent hours there Saturday working to safely catch and load the dogs into vehicles to get them to safety.
The group returned Sunday and spent 6 more hours on the property working to ensure every dog was safe. Chrissy said unfortunately, one dog was found dead on the property and they have been unable to catch one other dog. However, 72 were brought to safety.
Now the community needs to step up and help cover vetting and help find homes for these sweet dogs. Several other rescues stepped up and offered to take on dogs from the situation.
Chrissy said Hub City Humane Society in Hattiesburg, Mississippi is helping, as well as Pretty Pittie Committee.
