LOWNDES COUNTY — Two people have been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting at a Columbus apartment complex, including a 16-year-old who authorities say is believed to be the first juvenile in Lowndes County charged as an adult under Mississippi’s new law targeting violent firearm offenses.
Deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, to a report of a drive-by shooting at Greentree Apartments, 500 Greentree Drive.
Investigators determined that about 12 rounds were fired from an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle during the shooting. Detectives recovered 12 spent shell casings at the scene. The suspects fled in a black Dodge Challenger.
Authorities said surveillance footage, witness interviews and forensic evidence helped investigators quickly identify those responsible.
On July 7, investigators arrested 18-year-old Jacory Smart. After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office and reviewing the evidence, officials formally charged Smart with attempted murder on Wednesday, July 8.
A 16-year-old suspect also was arrested July 7 for his alleged role in the shooting. Following a review of the case, prosecutors charged the juvenile as an adult under Mississippi Senate Bill 2710, which allows certain juveniles accused of violent crimes involving firearms to be prosecuted in adult court.
The sheriff’s office said it believes this is the first case in Lowndes County in which a juvenile has been charged as an adult under the provisions of the new law.
Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said the case should serve as a warning to families about the consequences of gun violence.
“This case should serve as a reminder to parents and guardians to have serious conversations with their children about the consequences of carrying or using firearms during the commission of a violent crime,” Hawkins said. “Under Mississippi Senate Bill 2710, juveniles who commit certain violent offenses while using a firearm can now be prosecuted as adults. One poor decision can have life-changing consequences for both the offender and the victim.”
The investigation remains active, and authorities said additional arrests or charges are possible.
