JACKSON – A man in a wheelchair was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle on Medgar Evers Boulevard.
Jackson police said Precinct 3 officers responded around 8:47 p.m. July 5 to the 5900 block of Medgar Evers Boulevard, also known as U.S. 49, for a fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash.
When officers arrived, they found an unidentified Black male lying deceased in a grassy area with a wheelchair nearby.
Police said the driver of a black Dodge Ram remained at the scene. The driver told officers he was traveling south on Medgar Evers Boulevard when he saw the victim in a wheelchair traveling north in the middle of the roadway.
According to police, the driver said he attempted to avoid hitting the victim but was unable to do so. The victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
AMR, the Jackson Fire Department, Accident Investigations, Crime Scene Investigations and the Hinds County coroner responded to the scene. The coroner took possession of the body.
The crash remains under investigation.
