HINDS COUNTY – An 18-year-old inmate died Friday after he was found unresponsive in his cell at the Raymond Detention Center, according to the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said Mielun Butler was found unresponsive earlier Friday morning. He was taken to Merit Health, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Officials said the cause of death appears to be an assault.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
According to the sheriff’s office, Butler was booked into the detention center on July 1, 2026, by the Jackson Police Department on a murder charge.
