The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is urging residents to take steps to protect their homes, belongings and finances during Flood Awareness Week.
According to MEMA, flooding can happen anywhere, and with flooding already occurring in parts of the state and more rainfall forecast throughout the week, residents are encouraged to prepare now.
Officials said residents should review their flood risk and consider flood insurance if they live in a flood-prone area.
MEMA reminded residents that standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage.
Residents are also encouraged to take photos of important documents and valuable belongings, create a home inventory and store important records in a safe, waterproof location.
MEMA said preparing ahead of time can help reduce financial losses and make recovery easier if flooding occurs.
