ELLISVILLE – A South Jones High School football player has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a classmate, according to the Laurel Leader-Call.
Anthony Jackson, 16, appeared Tuesday in Jones County Youth Court, where it was ruled that he will be tried as an adult. His bond was set at $1 million.
Jackson is accused in the May 16 killing of Yahir Alba near the Texaco on Highway 590 near Ellisville. Alba was described as a close friend of Jackson, the Laurel Leader-Call reported.
It is unclear where Jackson will be housed, as the Jones County Detention Center does not take juveniles adjudicated as adults.
Jackson, nicknamed “Squirrel,” was a standout running back for the South Jones Braves as a freshman. According to the Laurel Leader-Call, Jackson listed several colleges on his Facebook page that had already given him scholarship offers.
The case remains under investigation.
