COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE — Two pilots ejected safely Tuesday after a T-38 Talon II training aircraft from Columbus Air Force Base was involved in a mishap at approximately 12:00 p.m., according to a press release from the 14th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs Office.
Stars and Stripes reports that the aircraft came down in rural Lamar County, Alabama, near the Mississippi border. The cause of the mishap is currently unknown and will be investigated by a Safety Investigation Board, officials said.
The T-38 Talon II is a supersonic trainer operated by the 14th Flying Training Wing, whose mission focuses on specialized undergraduate pilot training at the base in rural Lowndes County, approximately seven miles north of Columbus in the northeast part of the state, according to Stars And Stripes.
Authorities say no additional details about the pilots or the circumstances leading to the ejection have been released at this time. Officials said more information will be made available as it becomes known.
