LAUREL – An Ellisville man was arrested Saturday after a traffic stop in Laurel turned into a foot chase that ended inside a local business, according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said Deputy Clay Sullivan stopped a Toyota Tundra on First Street in front of Sol Plaza after seeing the driver allegedly driving recklessly on Interstate 59 and later on 16th Avenue in Laurel.

The driver, identified as 36-year-old Antonio Calihua of Ellisville, got out of the truck and aggressively resisted being detained before running away on foot, according to the sheriff’s department.

During the chase, Sullivan deployed his Taser, authorities said. Calihua then ran through the front door of Sol Plaza and into the store, causing damage to merchandise and fixtures, according to investigators.

Sullivan called for backup and tackled Calihua inside the business, the sheriff’s department said. Authorities said Calihua continued resisting arrest until additional units from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Laurel Police Department arrived.

Calihua was taken into custody and transported to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel for treatment of a cut he suffered while resisting arrest, according to authorities.

He is charged with first-offense DUI, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, no insurance, no driver’s license and reckless driving.
