Jackson hair salon wins appeal after model claimed photos used without permission

JACKSON — A Mississippi appeals court has thrown out a $50,000 judgment against a Jackson hair salon, ruling that a woman who claimed the business used her photos without permission actually agreed to the arrangement all along.

Ada Green sued salon owner Latrice Rogers in 2022, saying Rogers put photos of Green on billboards, flyers and vending machines to advertise her hair extension business — Goddess of Great Lengths — without ever getting Green’s consent or paying her for it. A Hinds County jury sided with Green last August and awarded her $150,000. Judge Adrienne Wooten later cut that to $50,000.

But the Mississippi Court of Appeals reversed the judgment Monday, saying Green’s own behavior told a different story than her testimony.

The court pointed to Green’s social media posts, where she had celebrated seeing herself on billboards and described herself as a “brand ambassador” for the salon, the same role she denied holding in court. She also admitted she never once asked Rogers to take the photos down during the roughly six years they were in use.

Rogers testified that Green not only agreed to the photo shoots but personally chose which pictures went on which marketing materials. Two other witnesses backed that account.

Green said she only participated because it was part of her job, and that she posted about the salon on social media because Rogers made her.

Under Mississippi law, Green had to prove Rogers used her image without her consent. The appeals court said she didn’t come close to proving that, and threw the case out entirely.

One judge dissented but did not explain why.
