NATCHEZ – A 4-year-old child died Tuesday after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool near a home on Creek Street, according to the Natchez Police Chief.

Officers responded to a 911 call at about 10 a.m. regarding an unresponsive juvenile at a home on Creek Street. When they arrived, a utility worker was performing CPR on the child, authorities said.

Chief Lee said officers secured the scene and joined emergency medical personnel in performing lifesaving measures. CPR continued during transport to the hospital, where the juvenile was later pronounced dead.

According to authorities, the child’s stepfather had been mowing the grass when the juvenile wandered across the street and slipped into an old swimming pool behind a neighboring residence.

When the stepfather realized the child was no longer in the yard, he went door to door searching, authorities said. After several minutes, the child was found unresponsive in the pool.

Nearby utility workers rushed over to help until police and EMS arrived, according to officials.

Chief Lee said the death appears to have been a tragic accident.

Officials also said law enforcement, dispatchers and emergency medical personnel worked extensively to try to save the child.
