In a storm safety graphic, MEMA encouraged people to charge their phones during the day, identify their safe spot in advance and turn weather alerts on loud.
The agency also advised residents to prepare that safe area with pillows and helmets, keep shoes nearby and make sure they have multiple ways to receive alerts.
MEMA said people should know their county, follow their local National Weather Service office and download the free MEMA app.
The checklist also reminds pet owners to keep a leash nearby in case they need to move quickly during severe weather.
Emergency officials have repeatedly warned that overnight storms can be especially dangerous because people may be asleep when warnings are issued. MEMA is encouraging Mississippians to make preparations before bad weather develops.
