JACKSON — The Mississippi Department of Corrections is highlighting services available to crime victims through its Division of Victim Services, which provides notifications, resources and support to those impacted by crime.

The division’s primary role is to notify registered victims prior to an inmate’s release, as well as in cases of escape, recapture or death while in custody. Officials say the program is designed to ensure victims remain informed and involved throughout the criminal justice process.

The Division of Victim Services also offers referrals for counseling, crisis intervention, support groups and information about compensation programs. Staff assist victims with questions about inmate status, parole conditions and other public information.

According to the agency, victims must register with the division to receive notifications. Once enrolled, they are entitled to updates, including notice within 15 days before an inmate’s release or following significant changes in custody status.

The program operates a toll-free hotline available 24/7, allowing victims to request information, update contact details and learn how to submit statements for parole or pardon consideration.

Officials say the division also works to train corrections staff on victim sensitivity and collaborates with service providers across the state to improve resources and communication.

The services are part of broader protections outlined in the Mississippi Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights, which guarantees victims access to information and participation in the justice process.

The Division of Victim Services can be reached at 601-359-5628 during business hours or toll-free at 1-866-522-4087.
