ADAMS COUNTY – After a disturbing incident in Natchez where police said a mother made death threats to her infant child, the Adams County Sheriff is reminding the community of safe, legal options to parents if they feel overwhelmed.

UPDATE: 3 arrested in disturbing Natchez infant case; mother charged with attempted murder, child abuse

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten is urging anyone facing overwhelming circumstances and struggling to care for a child to seek help and use legal, safe options available in Mississippi.

Patten said financial hardship, emotional strain and other difficult situations can leave people feeling like they have no way out, but stressed that harming a child is never the answer.

“You are not out of options,” Patten said. “And your child’s life is never the answer to your struggle.”

Patten said Mississippi’s Safe Haven Law allows infants up to 45 days old to be safely surrendered with no questions asked at any hospital emergency room, fire station or police department, including the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

He also pointed to temporary guardianship arrangements, which allow a trusted family member or friend to care for a child for a period of time, as well as assistance from the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services.

Patten said adoption services are also available through licensed agencies and encouraged anyone in crisis to seek immediate support through the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

“Let me be clear: asking for help is not failure, it is strength,” Patten said.

The sheriff said his office is committed not only to enforcing the law but also to protecting children and connecting struggling families with resources.

“If you are struggling, call someone,” Patten said. “Call a family member. Call a church. Call a local agency. Call us, we will help connect you with the resources you need.”
