Starkville Police Officer Colby Huffman walks out of the hospital in Atlanta.STARKVILLE — A Starkville Police Department officer critically injured in a February motorcycle crash has reached a major milestone in his recovery, walking out of the hospital after nearly two months of intensive treatment.
Cpl. Colby Huffman, who was hurt Feb. 21 while escorting a funeral detail, is continuing his recovery in Atlanta, where he will undergo four to eight weeks of outpatient therapy, according to an update from his family shared by SPD on April 19.
Huffman had spent 56 days in intensive care and inpatient rehabilitation following the crash, which left him with serious injuries, including head trauma and a broken femur. He was initially airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center before later transferring to a specialized rehabilitation facility in Georgia.
His family said Huffman progressed from critical condition in the ICU to walking on his own after weeks of therapy and multiple medical procedures, including surgery to repair his leg and a tracheostomy to assist with breathing.
“The walk we’ve been waiting for,” his family said in a statement, describing his recovery as a series of “uphill battles” marked by determination and resilience.
Huffman will remain in Atlanta for continued therapy before eventually returning home to Mississippi. His family said they recently relocated to a new apartment during this phase of treatment and encouraged supporters to continue sending messages of encouragement.
The officer’s recovery has drawn widespread community support in Starkville, where residents and local businesses have organized fundraisers to assist with medical and travel expenses.
Huffman was injured in the line of duty while serving the community, and officials have continued to highlight his progress as a sign of hope following the serious crash.
