HINDS COUNTY — The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration for a nationwide initiative aimed at safely disposing of unused and expired medications.
The Prescription Drug Take Back event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering residents a free and anonymous way to discard prescription drugs and vape pens.
Officials said the effort is designed to address growing concerns over accidental poisonings, overdoses, prescription drug misuse and theft. Proper disposal also helps prevent environmental harm, as flushing medications can contaminate lakes and streams and affect drinking water quality.
Community members can drop off medications at two locations: Northtown Pharmacy and Cade Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Authorities said both controlled and non-controlled substances, as well as over-the-counter medications, will be accepted. However, sharps and needles will not be permitted.
The event is part of a nationwide initiative led by the DEA to provide safe disposal options and reduce the risks associated with unused medications.
