WALNUT GROVE – Inmates nearing release at Walnut Grove Correctional Facility are taking part in mock job interviews aimed at helping them prepare to reenter the workforce, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

The department said 13 participants were interviewed this week by staff members, including case managers, alcohol and drug counselors and administrative personnel.

During the interviews, participants discussed employment gaps, personal strengths and common workplace challenges. They were also asked about their skills, interests and how they would respond in job-related situations, MDOC said.

“This is an opportunity for them to prepare for the real thing,” Case Manager Devon Moore said in a statement. “Sitting down and answering questions similar to what an employer would ask helps them build confidence and prepare for employment opportunities.”

MDOC said many of the participants have earned educational and vocational certifications while incarcerated.

Facilitator Vickie Barton said the program is meant to help participants carry those accomplishments with them as they prepare for release.

“This type of preparation reinforces that the work they have done through programs, certifications and classes can be carried forward as they reenter the workforce,” Barton said.

Participants were encouraged to be honest with potential employers about their incarceration and explain how they used their time productively through programs such as anger management, life skills and vocational training.

“Just because someone has a felony conviction does not mean they do not meet the qualifications for employment,” one participant said.
