STARKVILLE — Starkville has earned national recognition after being voted the No. 1 Best Small Town in the South in a readers’ choice ranking by USA Today, highlighting the city’s blend of culture, hospitality, and small-town charm.
The ranking, part of USA Today’s annual 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards, focused on towns with populations of around 25,000 or fewer. An expert panel selected nominees, and readers determined the final rankings. Starkville topped the list, praised for offering more than just a traditional college-town experience.
Located in eastern Mississippi near the Alabama state line, Starkville sits in Oktibbeha County and is part of the Golden Triangle region, which also includes Columbus and West Point. The city is about 25 miles west of the Alabama state line and roughly 125 miles northeast of Jackson, placing it in a region known for its mix of rural landscapes and growing economic development.
At the heart of Starkville is Mississippi State University, which plays a major role in shaping the city’s identity, economy and culture. But according to USA Today’s description, Starkville stands out for much more than its college roots.
The publication highlighted the city’s thriving arts scene, historic districts and access to outdoor recreation, including birdwatching opportunities and nearby outdoor areas. Among its notable attractions is the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts and correspondence related to the former president.
Local tourism leaders also point to Starkville’s growing food scene as a major draw. The city offers a range of dining options, from farm-to-table cuisine and Southern specialties to international flavors such as Peruvian and Indian fare. Visitors can also explore boutique shopping, farmers markets and community events that showcase the area’s local culture.
Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to nearby destinations like the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, which offers hiking trails, wildlife viewing and scenic landscapes just outside the city.
Known as “Mississippi’s College Town,” Starkville has built a reputation for its welcoming atmosphere, particularly during Mississippi State game days, when the campus fills with visitors and alumni. That mixture of hospitality, culture and recreation helped propel the city to the top spot in the national ranking.
City leaders and residents say the recognition reflects what locals have long known: that Starkville offers a unique blend of small-town warmth and big-city amenities, making it a standout destination in the South.
