BROOKHAVEN – Brookhaven Animal Rescue League is asking the community to help find homes for 33 puppies that recently arrived at the shelter, highlighting what staff say is an ongoing pet overpopulation problem.
According to the rescue league, the puppies came from four mother dogs and include nine “C” puppies, seven “N” puppies, nine “P” puppies and eight “R” puppies, along with one puppy nicknamed “Spot.”
The shelter’s adoption center holds about 50 dogs, making the recent intake a significant strain on available space, the organization said.
Rescue league officials said expanding shelter space is not the answer. Instead, they are encouraging residents to adopt and to support spay and neuter efforts to help prevent more unwanted litters.
“Right now, we need 33 homes for 33 puppies,” the organization said in a social media post.
The puppies are current on vaccinations, microchipped and have been spayed or neutered, with the exception of four that have not yet had surgery, according to the rescue league.
The puppies can be viewed online at barl.net/adopt. In-person visits are available Thursday through Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. The shelter will be closed Easter Sunday.
Those needing an after-hours appointment can contact Gail at 601-757-3211.
Brookhaven Animal Rescue League also reminded pet owners that neutering male dogs is just as important as spaying female dogs in helping reduce pet overpopulation.
