Pearl police resolve domestic disturbance at motel after armed standoff

PEARL – Pearl police said an armed domestic disturbance at a motel Monday afternoon ended peacefully after a brief standoff and negotiations.

According to the Pearl Police Department, officers were called around 2:30 p.m. March 30 to the Super 8 Motel at 111 Airport Road after a woman reported that an ex was attempting to steal her vehicle.

Officers with the Patrol and Special Operations divisions responded and began an investigation. Police said officers found that the woman had injuries consistent with domestic violence.

Authorities learned which motel room the man was staying in and tried to make contact, but he refused to answer the door, police said. Officers were able to reach him by phone, and he told them he was not coming out.

Because of the domestic violence nature of the call, the situation was treated as an armed subject incident and turned over to the Pearl Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team, according to police.

An officer certified in hostage negotiations spoke with the man for about 30 minutes, police said, leading to the man exiting the room and surrendering without incident.

Police said the case ended peacefully and thanked the officers involved in bringing the situation to a resolution.
