MISSING IN MISSISSIPPI: Lou Emma Stokes, Carroll County

CARROLLTON — More than four decades after her disappearance, Lou Emma Stokes remains missing, and authorities continue to seek information in the case.

Stokes, a 67-year-old Black woman, was last seen around 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, 1983, walking along a gravel road near her home about two miles south of Carrollton, just off Mississippi 17, according to investigators.

She is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing approximately 125 pounds at the time of her disappearance.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department, along with volunteer firefighters, conducted an intensive search in the days following her disappearance but found no trace of Stokes.

In the months after she vanished, the Carroll County Board of Supervisors approved a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with the case.

Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made, and Stokes has never been located.

In 2012, family members and community supporters gathered for a memorial celebration and monument dedication in her honor, underscoring the lasting impact of her disappearance.

Authorities continue to investigate the case and urge anyone with information to contact the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department at 662-237-9283.
