WALTHALL COUNTY – A defendant in a child-related case will be transferred to federal custody following the resolution of charges in Walthall County Circuit Court, according to District Attorney Brendon Adams.
Edwin Rigoberto Orocco Ramirez, who had been held in the Walthall County Jail, entered a plea to one count of touching a child for lustful purposes. He received a 15-year sentence, which was suspended.
Officials said the sentence was structured to allow for Ramirez to be promptly transferred into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement so that federal immigration proceedings can move forward without delay.
Adams said the resolution of the state case was handled in coordination with a federal warrant to ensure accountability under federal immigration law.
“Our office works diligently to be good stewards of local, state and federal resources to ensure that justice is served and defendants are held accountable for their crimes,” Adams said. “Though sentences may seem unique at times, our office operates strategically and tactically to ensure that our communities remain safe for our families to live, work and worship.”
Authorities also commended the witnesses, officers and investigators involved in the case.
