ALCORN COUNTY – An inmate at the Alcorn County Jail was found unresponsive early Tuesday during routine cell checks and was later pronounced dead, according to the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s officials said jail staff discovered the inmate at about 6:30 a.m. in a single-occupancy cell.
Staff began CPR immediately and called for medical assistance, authorities said. Magnolia EMS responded and pronounced the inmate dead at the jail.
Alcorn County deputies and investigators secured the scene, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called to conduct an independent investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
The Alcorn County coroner is expected to transport the body to the state crime lab for an autopsy. Authorities said additional information will be released when available.
