ADAMS COUNTY – Adams County Sheriff’s Office said a missing person investigation has become a death investigation after deputies found a body at an abandoned home.
Source: Adams Co. SOSheriff Travis Patten said his office was notified Jan. 26, 2026, by Edward Good with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office about a missing person identified as Terrance Jones. Patten said Jones’ sister contacted the sheriff’s office the following morning with additional information and requested assistance.
Deputies were dispatched to 28 North Commerce Street Extension and spoke with the homeowner, who said she had not seen Jones since December, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies later returned to the same address but were unable to make contact with the homeowner, officials said.
While at the location, a patrol sergeant noticed an open rear door at an abandoned house at 30 North Commerce Street Extension, authorities said. Deputies reported a strong odor from inside, announced their presence and entered the residence, where they found a body wrapped in blankets in a room, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators later found a wallet on the deceased containing identification for Terrance Jones, authorities said.
The Adams County Coroner took custody of the body and will transport it to the Mississippi Crime Laboratory for examination by the state medical examiner to determine an official cause of death, the sheriff’s office said. Officials said there were no obvious signs of foul play, but a full forensic examination is pending.
The body was found Feb. 1 at about 11:48 a.m., authorities said. Further information will be released as the investigation allows.
