SOUTHAVEN — A free educational course on the legal use of force will be offered Jan. 29 at Sportsman’s Warehouse in Southaven, focusing on when and how individuals may legally defend themselves, their families and their homes.
The class, titled “The Legal Use of Force,” is scheduled from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at Sportsman’s Warehouse–Southaven, located at 130 Marathon Way. The course is open to the public at no cost.
Organizers say the session will cover the legal standards that must be met before any level of force can be used, including the distinction between force and deadly force. Topics will include the use-of-force continuum, disparity of force, self-defense laws such as duty to retreat, stand-your-ground and the Castle Doctrine, and what individuals should do following a self-defense incident.
The course will also include scenario-based activities and discussion of home defense strategies, decision-making tools and participants’ rights after an incident. The training is being offered in partnership with the U.S. Concealed Carry Association, which provides education on personal protection and responsible firearms ownership.
Attendees will receive an in-store discount following the class, according to organizers. Participants are encouraged to bring snacks, drinks, and materials for note-taking.
