CORINTH — The Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter is mourning the loss of Mex, a longtime resident remembered not as “just” a shelter dog, but as a guardian, protector, and family member.
Mex arrived at the shelter in 2018 and quickly formed strong bonds with staff members. While he showed deep loyalty to his caretakers, shelter officials said he was not a dog who could be safely adopted into a home. Rather than euthanize or give up on him, the shelter chose to provide Mex with a life of dignity and purpose.
Over the years, Mex became the shelter’s nighttime guardian. Staff said he was released each evening with full access to the shelter’s play yards, where he watched over the property he came to know as home. Though shelter life is not ideal for most animals, staff said Mex thrived in the familiarity of routine, trusted faces, and the environment where he felt secure.
In recent months, Mex’s health began to decline. Arthritis caused him to lose strength in his back legs, and his eyesight faded significantly, according to the shelter. Staff said the decision to let him go was heartbreaking but made out of love and compassion.
Mex passed away peacefully with shelter staff by his side.
“He wasn’t just a shelter dog,” the shelter said in a statement. “He was family. He was protection. He was loyalty.”
Staff said Mex will be deeply missed, but his presence and purpose will always be remembered.
