Severe storms and heavy rain are expected across the area today, according to the National Weather Service.
Rain and thunderstorms are forecast to increase in coverage through the afternoon, with severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph. A tornado or two is also possible across the region. Most of the severe weather threat is expected to diminish by about 10 p.m., though areas along the Highway 84 corridor could see storms linger into late tonight.
Forecasters also warn of multiple rounds of heavy rainfall, with totals of 2 to 4 inches expected through tonight and localized amounts of 3 to 6 inches possible, particularly near and south of the Natchez Trace. Rainfall rates could reach 2 to 3 inches per hour.
The heavy rain may lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas. Minor river flooding is also possible, the National Weather Service said.
